World cup fever unleashes email scammers

Internet security vendor, SurfControl has tracked another email phishing scam targeting 2006 FIFA World Cup enthusiasts.

The latest scam was in Japanese and claims to provide information on how to score top tickets to the World Cup in Germany for a small fee.

The scammer attempts to persuade recipients to send 1,000 yen ($US10) to one of three specified accounts.

The email states that once the money has been received, a text message with information on how to receive World Cup tickets will be sent back to a mobile phone number supplied by the victim.

SurfControl anticipates that additional scams and attacks tied into the event may be looming due to the global popularity of the World Cup.

SurfControl also tracked a blended phishing and malcode threat tied to the World Cup in March.
