Wireless policies lag laptop usage

Many companies are still struggling to implement security policies in line with the increased usage of wireless networks, according to new research.

A survey of 56 public and private American companies showed that less than half had implemented polices for their wireless networks. One-third of all virus infections were the result of wireless-enabled lapotops being taken outside the managed network.

Endpoint security company Senforce Technologies conducted the research in New York, Washington DC, San Francisco, Utah and Salt Lake City. It found that 82 percent of new PCs were laptops, and that 74 percent of laptops were wireless-enabled.

The survey also revealed that while 87 percent of critical business data is found on endpoint PCs, 56 percent of those surveyed said their current wireless network security strategy was reactive or inadequate.
