Daniel Greenberg, who operated US web sales business "Classic Closeouts", has been banned from running any website that handles internet payments.

Greenberg is "banned from owning, controlling, or consulting for any Internet-related business that handles consumers' credit card or debit card accounts," according to a statement issued on Thursday by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Greenberg was alleged to have made unauthorised charges to former customers using details the company had acquired during previous transactions.

The charges ranged between US$59.99 to US$79.99.

While he has been ordered to pay US$2.09 million - the damage the company was estimated to have caused - Greenberg recently filed for bankruptcy.

The company was one of more damaging scams the FTC identified during a post-recession crackdown on web rorts.
