South Australia Police has deployed 20 digital fingerprint scanners at police stations across metropolitian and remote areas of the state.
Fingerprints were captured and sent to the federal government agency CrimTrac in Canberra which cross-checked the prints against a national database to determine if suspects were persons of interest.
NEC, which developed the LiveScan system, said the results from CrimTrac were immediate.
“The digitising of fingerprint images means identity information can be collected in a matter of seconds, which is a significant improvement on past technology," NEC Australia business development manager Lance Heather said.
The system was supplied under a three-year contract between SA Police and NEC, which included support.
It is one part of a suite of technology platforms used by SA Police including mobile fingerprint scanners and a StarChase GPS tracking system.
Fixed and mobile fingerprint scanners were used by state police services across Australia.
