Melbourne distributor Multimedia Technology (MMT) is set to open Sydney and Brisbane branches.

The $60 million, 58-employee company has assigned former employees of rival distributors to head the new offices.

Former Global Business Technology staffer Gordon Taylor has been appointed to manage an MMT sales office in Sydney.

Lauren Matlin from Queensland's BBF will lead the Brisbane team.

MMT had an abortive attempt at Sydney expansion last year, when it was asked to buy specialist Sydney distributor Tech Express.

MMT-related interests acquired equity to buy some Tech Express assets in mid-2003.

However, that company - which had been re-named Tech Express Distribution - was wound up towards the end of that year.

Some Tech Express staff and resources were since incorporated into MMT's operations.

The 14-year-old firm focuses on hardware from consumer and entertainment brands such as Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer and Olympus.
