Linux kernel gets an update

An update for the Linux platform operating system kernel has been posted.

Linux creator Linus Torvalds announced the 2.6.34 update late Sunday on the Linux Kernel Mailing List.

"Nothing very interesting here, which is just how I like it," wrote Torvalds in announcing the update.

"Various random fixes all over, nothing really stands out."

Among the new features in the update is the addition of Ceph. The network file system allows storage for extremely large workloads and has been designed to scale up to extremely large storage systems.

Also added to the kernel is LogFS, a file system designed for removable flash storage devices.

Other additions to the 2.6.34 kernel include the addition of new virtualisation components, support for Radeon 5xxx graphics cards and support for notebook systems which run both integrated and discrete graphics hardware.

Minor updates in the new version also include security fixes, networking updates and a number of new drivers for various hardware platforms.
