Juniper Networks has agreed to acquire Kagoor Networks, a supplier of session border control (SBC) technology, for $67.5 million in cash.

SBCs are integral to providing security and assurance to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and other media services, according to Juniper.

"Network operators worldwide are increasingly looking to deliver enhanced VoIP and other rich services to their enterprise and consumer customers, but they need to do this in a secure and assured fashion. SBC technology is a key element in delivering these attributes," Kittu Kolluri, general manager of the security products group at Juniper.

But Shelly Sofer, spokeswoman for messaging security supplier BorderWare Technologies, said an SBC is not a security product. "An SBC sits between your LAN and the internet managing traffic, and doing NAT (Network Address Translation) traversal," she said in an email statement.

A security offering for VoIP must do more, she added. An SBC does not mitigate denial-of-service attacks that can consume bandwidth in a VoIP, eavesdropping, or call redirection.

Juniper's acquisition of Kagoor is expected to close in the second quarter of this year, subject to customary closing conditions.
