Internode offers security for business
Internode has announced the availability of IronPort spam and virus filter technology as a service for its small and medium business customers.

The ISP’s new Business Mail Filter service provides spam and virus protection for business customers that operate their own email servers.

According to the ISP, the company has been using the technology internally and has based the new service on its internal email protection system.

“The beauty of this system is that Internode has road tested it to meet its own needs, so we know first hand that it works,” said Jim Kellett, product
manager at Internode.

Furthermore, Internode claimed the service will reduce download volumes by rejecting unwanted email before it reaches the server and reduce costs by eliminating the need for spam and virus filters.

Costs begins at $25 a month for the service.

ISP filtering advocate, Raimund Genes CTO at Trend Micro believes it is up to ISPs to protect users without additional charge.

“Why do they [ISPs] charge extra for added security? Why aren’t they forced by the government to do steps?”

Admittedly he said he understands it’s not easy for the ISPs, and thinks it needs to be government-enforced as it is in Japan.

“The Japanese government is now forcing the ISPs to comply and to do malware checking, and they all have to start this on the 1st of January next year.”

David Peterson, consumer segment director ANZ at Trend Micro warned against relying solely on anti-virus filtering and said an comprehensive internet security technology is recommended to protect against the today’s threats.
