Chainguard’s survey of 1,200 software engineers and technology leaders reveals where progress is being made — and where friction still blocks productivity.
Across the industry, engineers are being pulled in too many directions. In this survey, 72% said the demands on their time make it difficult to focus on building new features — a sign that innovation is being squeezed by competing priorities. At the same time, 88 % said switching between tools disrupts their productivity, with almost half (44%) experiencing a significant loss of focus as a result.
But there’s reason for optimism. Among the 65% of organisations that have mostly or fully automated their workflows, 94% of engineers said they now spend the majority of their time on work that energises them. The data shows that thoughtful automation doesn’t just reduce manual effort — it helps teams reclaim time, attention and creative energy for the work that drives real progress.
