Internationalised domain names inch forward

Internationalised top-level domains have cleared another hurdle, after a test commissioned by Icann failed to detect any adverse effect from domain names containing non-ASCI characters on root name servers.

The test was performed by replicating the root server environment and introducing the foreign characters.

The results clear the way for domain names that use right-to-left scripts such as Arabic, and non-alphabetic scripts such as Chinese.

The introduction of internationalised domain names is expected to enhance the local internet experience in non-Western regions by allowing people to access services in their local language.
