Google seeds Australian broadband research

Google Australia has provided seed funds for University of Melbourne researchers to develop "new broadband applications and services".

The money provided under the Institute for a Broadband Enabled Society's industry partner program, would be made available in amounts of $30,000 to $70,000 with a view to developing innovative broadband solutions, especially in the areas of health, education, e-government and e-business.

"Google has a strong track record of supporting research and development in Australia, and we are delighted to be partnering with IBES to drive innovation in broadband applications and services," said Alan Noble, engineering director, Google Australia.

IBES Director, Laureate Professor Rod Tucker said, "We are delighted that Google is supporting research at IBES, and are grateful for their support. It demonstrates an active engagement by Industry to drive development and innovation in broadband applications and services."

Google becomes a platinum level partner with IBES's industry program, which is funded by the State Government of Victoria and the University of Melbourne. 

An institute spokesman said total funding from the search giant depended on expressions of interest received.

A panel of institute researchers and Google Australia executives would judge proposals.

Applications close on June 9.
