The five-inch Streak, which will also be on a $59 Optus monthly plan, was the latest tablet computer based on Google's Android operating system to take a tilt at the segment dominated by Apple's iPad.

It had 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networking for e-mail, web browsing, social networking, games and making phone calls. Applications were delivered through the Android Marketplace.

It was powered by Qualcomm's 1GHz Snapdragon processor and ran the 'Donut' 1.6 version of the Google mobile OS. Dell said it would upgrade the operating system at a later date.

Streak squared off against the 40 percent bigger $999 Samsung Galaxy Tab unveiled earlier this week in Australia.

Dell founder and chief executive officer Michael Dell demonstrated a seven-inch Streak running Android on Wednesday at Oracle's Open World conference in San Francisco.
