Plans to acquire Scalent..

Dell has signed an agreement to buy datacentre software developer Scalent, with the aim of integrating the firm's technology into its Advanced Infrastructure Manager (AIM) suite.

AIM is designed to simplify datacentre management by enabling a single administrator to dynamically allocate compute, storage and network resources for physical and virtual application workloads. AIM is a key component of Dell's Virtual Integrated System.

“Scalent provides a critical building block for our Virtual Integrated System, the most open, capable and affordable converged infrastructure solution available,” said Brad Anderson, Dell senior vice president, Enterprise Product Group.

“This acquisition will solidify an important component of our enterprise solution portfolio. Scalent’s open architecture is an example of Dell’s ongoing commitment to provide customers with solutions that don’t lock them into proprietary hardware or gateways.”

Dell said the deal would go a long way to helping it achieve its goal of providing enterprises with datacentre management and optimisation tools that can cut costs by up to 50 percent.
