Blue Security stops anti-spam operations

By

Israeli-based firm Blue Security has ceased its anti-spam operations just over a week after a spam-based attack shut down the company website.

The weeklong DDoS attack, which was apparently in retaliation for the company’s anti-spam business model, convinced company officials they could not go on as they envisioned, the firm said on its website.

“The week before last, these spammers launched a serious attack against us, taking down hundreds of thousands of other websites via a massive (DDoS) attack and causing damage to ISPs, website owners and internet users worldwide. They also began a relentless campaign of email intimidation against many members of the Blue Community,” the company said on a statement posted on its website. “After recovering from the attack, we determined that once we reactivated the Blue community, spammers would resume their attacks. We cannot take the responsibility for an ever-escalating cyber war through our continued operations.”

The company indicated that it would continue operations, but in a different business direction.

For nearly eight hours last week, the ambush also crashed TypePad and LiveJournal services belonging to blog host Six Apart, according to internet monitoring company Netcraft. While experiencing the DDoS attacks, Blue Security redirected web traffic to a restored Six Apart blog, which subsequently was attacked.

The company said this week that it would continue to honor privacy commitments with customers.
