The system will be powered by technology from industrial firm ABB, the first of which is to be delivered to the mine site mid next year.

Among the ABB technology is a System 800xA automation product designed "to integrate and control all processes and power systems".

The Grosvenor mine will target metallurgical coal from the same seam Anglo American is already mining through its Moranbah North operation.

Metallurgical coal is a key raw material in steelmaking.

ABB noted the systems it will supply would "help the new mine operate at peak energy and production efficiency, while providing a reliable electrical supply with less space required for the main substation".
