Amazon.com on 27 December reported its busiest holiday shopping season ever.

The US-based online retail giant also said in a statement that it set a singe-day record this season of more than 2.8 million units ordered, or 32 items per second.

The period between 25 November and 24 December was the "busiest holiday season ever", the company said.

Exact figures were not released.

On its peak day, Amazon.com shipped more than 2 million units to 217 countries, the company said.

More than 99 percent of its orders shipped in time to meet holiday deadlines.

One of Amazon.com's more remote shipments was a music CD entitled "The Mountain", by Del McCoury and Steve Earle, sent to Arctic Village, Alaska.
