But why would Microsoft let smartphone makers get away with all the attention for new devices running its own OS? Following the launch of its home-brand Surface tablet, rumours have been swirling Microsoft will also launch a home-grown phone.
The Surface marked the first time Microsoft went into competition with its hardware partners, and it is expected to do so again early next year with its own smartphone. Reports have emerged Microsoft has contracted smartphone developers and assemblers in China to build an own-brand Windows Phone 8 phone for sale sometime next year.
