Vividwireless turns on Brisbane metro network

ISP vividwireless has switched on its Brisbane wireless broadband network, bringing its first Queensland customers onto the service late last week.

Chief executive Martin Mercer told iTnews that the company had deployed about eight base stations in the Queensland capital.

Brisbane was the last of five capital cities to get a metro extension network in a program of work vividwireless announced in February last year.

Mercer said the Brisbane rollout was delayed "quite considerably" by the Queensland floods earlier this year.

"We were having problems getting backhaul provisioned because the Optus network got a bit of water damage," Mercer said.

Optus supplies the company all of its fibre backhaul network.

Mercer said that the Brisbane network was second only to Perth in the size of the broadband coverage area.

Vividwireless switched on metro extension networks in Sydney and Melbourne in July last year.

Extensions in Canberra and Adelaide have been operating for several months.
