The company first acknowledged the problem on Twitter just before 1pm, warning travellers across its network of significant delays and congestion.

Some flights were delayed as a result, with some customers reporting wait times of up to three hours.

The airline hasn’t yet revealed the cause or extent of the outage, but at 3:40pm said the issue had been resolved and guests had begun to be processed as normal for their flights.

FlightStats.com shows 239 Virgin flights were delayed on Monday, with 23 cancellations.

The outage comes just a few weeks after a Border Force systems outage caused chaos at Australia's international airports, with travellers unable to be processed by customs officials.
