UNSW fibre link sped up tenfold

Australia's academic and research network AARNet has upgraded the University of New South Wales' (UNSW) fibre network connection from 1-gigabit-per-second to its recently launched 10-gigabit-per-second product.

Manager of communication services at UNSW Greg Sawyer said the connection would provide its scientists with the potential for "expanding into new areas".

"A key development where AARNet's 10Gbps (gigabit per second) connection will make a significant contribution is in the new Lowy Cancer Research Centre that UNSW is opening later this year," he said.

He said that the cancer research centre would be the largest in the southern hemisphere and Australia's only fully integrated childhood and adult cancer research centre.

Chris Hancock, CEO of AARNet, said that the university now had the ability to conduct research "on a scale like never before."

"It's AARNet's mission to provide Australia's academic and research communities with access to the best possible network connections, to enable exploration into new areas of research and collaboration."
