Tsunami hacker charged

Daniel James Cuthbert, 28, of Commercial Street, Whitechapel, east London, was charged yesterday with a single offence under Section One of the Computer Misuse Act.

The charge follows an alleged "unauthorized access" of the the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) last New Year's Eve, according to Metropolitan Police. DEC has issued a statement reassuring people who have donated to the site that no money was taken from the fund.

He is to appear on bail at Horseferry Road Magistrates Court in London on next Thursday.

The disaster has been the target of several unconnected scams and worms. As reported here where a virus embedded in an email appealing for donations launched an attack on a German hacking website.

Last month, a man was jailed for six months for sending out hoax emails to families searching for missing relatives to inform them of their deaths.
