The basic anti-virus tool is being trialled internally and will be available in beta "soon", according to Microsoft. However, no specific launch date has been revealed.
The software will attempt to tackle viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans, according to the company.
Morro has caused speculation since it was announced, as it will inevitably impact on the revenues of established market incumbents such as Symantec and McAfee.
However, many argue that the reasons behind relatively low uptake of previous security offerings from Microsoft – such as Windows Live OneCare – will continue to win over consumers and SMEs.
Microsoft will discontinue Live OneCare at the end of June.
