Japan mulls Linux for seats in Government

The group, which includes representatives from Microsoft, is due to report by March 2003. The group will travel to other countries to examine implementations of Linux and other operating systems, said Ministry Deputy Director Tatsuya Kawachi.


Japan's Public Management Ministry has allocated 50 million yen for a panel of scholars and industry representatives to examine the scope for using Linux within the country's administration.

Members of the group have yet to be selected, he said.

The Japanese Government machine is believed to largely run on a Windows base.
