EMC touts embedded content management module
Storage vendor EMC has launched what it claims is the first embeddable enterprise content management platform designed for the original equipment manufacturer market.

Documentum OEM Edition is designed to help software developers implement EMC's Documentum as the content management foundation for any type of application that handles content.

These range from accounts-payable and contracts management applications, to vertical applications in life sciences, aerospace, financial services and energy.

Balaji Yelamanchili, senior vice president and general manager of content management and archiving at EMC, said: "Virtually every enterprise application today deals with some form of content: documents, XML, reports, electronic forms and more.

"Application vendors realise that building their own repositories and content platforms is very costly and can be a distraction to their core business.

"Partners use off-the-shelf databases for structured information, and similarly, their needs are better served by using an off-the-shelf content platform."

Toby Bell, research director at Gartner, added: "Enterprises want their strategic technology vendors to support an ecosystem of services and solutions partners certified in developing content-enabled vertical applications on stable, mature and feature-rich repositories.

"The leading business benefit of enterprise content management is derived from retiring isolated custom code and independent silos and adopting a solutions framework that ensures a good support/upgrade path while delivering immediate value toward business goals."
