Dept of Health and Aged Care picks Fay Flevaras as CDIO

Flevaras has previously spent the last three years as the department’s first assistant secretary of digital transformation and delivery.

During her tenure, Flevaras oversaw the department’s new aged care service provider management system is being built on Salesforce.

The department announced its recruitment for a full-time CDIO in October, as part of a reorganisation of its technology delivery that brought its separate IT and digital transformation units together.

Flevaras acted in the role during the recruitment but announced her elevation to the full-time position on January 14.

In a statement to iTnews, a Department of Health and Aged Care spokesperson said: “The CDIO role reflects the significant role of digital capability in shaping and delivering on departmental outcomes, as well as the size of the digital investment across the Health portfolio.”

Reporting to the department’s chief operating officer, Flevaras will now be responsible for overseeing its technology delivery, including both IT and digital transformation.

She will also “drive a department-wide, end-to-end digital-focus – starting by mobilising the foundational capabilities that underpin aligned strategy, governance, and digital investment”, the spokesperson added.

Her elevation follows the department’s appointment of David Lang as its new cyber security leader in October.

The Department of Health and Aged Care has been a key recipient of federal budget funds for “ICT infrastructure” in consecutive years, with a $312 million allocation in Budget 2022, followed by $214.5 million in Budget 2023 and $174.5 million in Budget 2024, following a royal commission into the sector.

In September, the department handed $289 million to Accenture to execute the large-scale digital transformation program.
