Court allows university to block spam

Less than a week after winning the NCAA national football championship, the university got another win – this time against spam emails.

The high court declined on Monday to intervene in a dispute between the university and White Buffalo Ventures, owner of an online dating service, over the school's decision to block thousands of unsolicited spam emails sent by the company, the Associated Press reported.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in August that the university did not violate White Buffalo's First Amendment rights by its 2003 decision to block the emails from LonghornSingles.com.

The university blocked the emails, saying spam had helped crash the university's computer system. The school had also issued White Buffalo a cease-and-desist order, which the company refused to comply with. White Buffalo did not return emails seeking comment on Monday.
