Appro workstation ships with 128GB of Ram
Enterprise computing systems firm Appro has unveiled its multi-processor XtremeWorkstation which ships with 128GB of system Ram.

The "mid- to high-end" x86 workstation offers two to four AMD Opteron 8000 series processors.

Appro is targeting the XtremeWorkstation at technical workloads in mechanical computer aided design, engineering, petroleum visualisation, automotive, aerospace, electronic design, digital content creation and 3D modelling.

The XtremeWorkstation offers up to two PCI-Express x16 slots for high-end graphics cards such as the nVidia Quadro FX4500 X2 and Quadro FX5500.

With the 128GB of memory the Appro workstation provides more than four times the graphics, processor and memory bandwidth of prior models, providing 25 per cent lower memory latency and twice the computing power.

"The workstation market for x86-based systems continues to show healthy growth, and many users are moving to larger memory sizes and high processor counts to support growing application requirements," said Earl Joseph, programme vice president at analyst firm IDC.

"The XtremeWorkstation is an example of new workstations designed to provide a higher level of capability to perform application intensive projects in less time for faster results.

"Processor speed and memory capabilities are key customer purchase requirements for the high performance computing market."
