Trustwave said that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the web security vendor with the acquisition expected to close within the next few weeks. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The acquisition will see Trustwave add M86's Secure Web Gateway, WebMarshal, Web Filtering and Reporting Suite products as well as enhance its position in email security with the addition of the M86 MailMarshal.

Upon completion of the acquisition, Trustwave said that the M86 Security Labs will merge with its own SpiderLabs, the advanced security team within Trustwave focused on penetration testing, incident response, application security and security research. Trustwave also plans to integrate M86 Security products into its cloud-based TrustKeeper portal.

M86 Security began life as Log-In Data before that rebranded to 8e6 Technologies in 2000, while a merger with Marshal Technologies in 2008 created the company Marshal8e6. It then rebranded to M86 Security in September 2009 and added technology from Finjan in November 2009.

Robert J. McCullen, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Trustwave, said: “By acquiring M86 Security, Trustwave is adding web security to one of the industry's most comprehensive security product portfolios. Customers and partners will benefit from our simplified approach to delivering advanced anti-malware technology through the cloud and our managed services.”
