ANZ Plus to go passwordless

Two authentication options to be offered from "mid-2025".

ANZ Plus, ANZ’s digital bank, will introduce two passwordless authentication methods for its web banking from mid-2025.

The bank said that customers will be able to log in either via an app or a passkey.

Using the app method, “customers can enter their mobile number and approve a login request sent to their ANZ Plus app” to log into their web banking.

The alternative is to use their face, fingerprint or device PIN to authenticate, as other digital banks such as NAB’s ubank allow.

ANZ’s group executive Australian retail Maile Carnegie said in a statement that the new methods would make authentication easier, while “helping prevent customer login details from the risk of data breaches or phishing attacks.”

It is understood that these two authentication methods will be the only way to log into accounts when introduced.

The announcement by ANZ comes days after news reports of the number of Australian banking credentials being harvested by infostealer malware and published online.
