Users put off shopping and banking online

Businesses are failing to convince people that they are taking internet security seriously, new research shows.

The study, commissioned by Enterasys Networks, sought the views of 1000 people from across the UK. According to the research half of those surveyed said they had never shopped online, with 43 percent stating that they are put off shopping and banking online because of security concerns.

The study also revealed that while a third of respondents feel very confident about their employer's ability to keep their private records secure, 42 percent of people questioned said they were unsure. Moreover, 34 percent believe information was more secure in the pre-digital age, when data was stored manually.

Mark Pearce, security specialist at Enterasys Networks said: "The survey shows that the individual has little confidence in the ability of their employer to effectively protect their confidential data from prying eyes.

"The public is much more aware today of the vast array of cyber threats to businesses. British businesses are often fearful to discuss publicly what steps they are taking to improve security internally. But, unless [they] convince more people that their data is secure they will vote with their feet and refuse to take advantage of the immense commercial advantages that digital business offers."
