The NSW Board of Studies Teaching and Educational Standards has appointed online media veteran Mark Cheeseman as its new chief digital officer.

Cheeseman moved from IT journalism to digital publishing in the ‘90s, having worked as the technical editor at early Australian computer magazine Your Computer, IT operations and development manager at APN and the first manager of online services at ZDNet Australia.
Since then, he has held a number of senior digital roles, including technology manager at Tatts Group, development and delivery manager at Independent Digital Media, and technical director at Point Blank Media.
More recently, Cheeseman spent four years as the senior manager of technology and planning at the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).
In his new position at BOSTES, Cheeseman will be responsible for leading the introduction of a range of digital technologies across assessment, cloud services, online learning, digitisation of services, and business system efficiencies.
A spokesperson for BOSTES said Cheeseman’s recent experience at ACARA had placed him “head and shoulders above other applicants”.
The BOSTES is the NSW government organisation in charge of the curriculum, state-wide assessment and teaching standards within the public school system.
The position had been advertised in January this year, after previous CDO Richard Doel-Mackaway moved to a new role as BOSTES’ senior project officer for online curriculum, learning and assessment.
