Google adds file upload feature to Docs

New storage capability to benefit business users.

Google has unveiled a new feature in Google Apps that will allow users to upload any type of file to Google Docs.

The appropriately named 'Upload any Filetype' can handle files up to 250MB in size.

The company said that the feature will be particularly useful for Google Apps Premier Edition users, who will be able to access work files without a connection to their internal office network.

Upload any Filetype will also be useful for employees when moving work places, as they will no longer have to save files on a USB stick or email the files to themselves, Google said.

Customers will initially be supplied with 1GB of storage, but Google Apps Premier Edition users will be able to purchase additional storage in the coming months.

The new feature will also be combined with Shared Folders in Google Docs to allow users to collaborate on files with co-workers and external parties.

Google will make the official announcement later today on the Google Apps blog.

"Instead of using cumbersome email attachments, you can upload files to a folder and share them with co-workers, who can then access and edit the files from a single place. You can even have your sales team securely share contracts with external clients for review," said Anil Sabharwal, Google Docs product manager.
