The move follows the introduction of Do Not Call legislation to parliament in May aimed at curbing the number of unsolicited calls received by Australians.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority said that Service Stream’s resources, technical skills, experience and value for money had seen it rise to the top of the tender pile.

ICT Minister Helen Coonan said work on the Register had been progressing well and an operational start date was expected in May.

Under the Do Not Call Register individuals will be able to register telephone numbers – either fixed line or mobile - that are used primarily for private or domestic use.

Telemarketers will then be prohibited from making a wide range of unsolicited telemarketing calls to those numbers, Coonan said.

Federal Government funding for the establishment and operation of the register is set at $33.1 million.

Service Stream Solutions is an arm of Service Stream Ltd, a group of companies also including: Service Stream Communications, Milcom Communications, Fibercom Technology and Total Communications Infrastructure.
