Optus confirms competitive iPad 3G plans

Vodafone yet to announce data prices.

Optus has confirmed its iPad 3G data plans, offering more data at different price points than rival Telstra.

Telstra was the first Australian carrier to release prices for the iPad WiFi+3G, with plans starting at $20 for 1GB of data.

Optus doubled the data in its basic plan, offering 2GB for $20. It also included more data in its $60 plan, providing 8GB versus Telstra's 6GB for the same price.

Optus' third iPad plan matched Telstra's at $30 for 3GB.

Vodafone Australia is yet to announce prices for its iPad 3G data plans, but a spokesman told iTnews that it would launch a registration site ahead of the iPad's May 28 release.

Australians paid 11 percent more than Americans for an iPad, which included GST (US prices were quoted without sales tax).

In the US customers can buy an unlimited data plan for US$29.99 (A$33.35) a month through telco AT&T.

"Optus' third iPad plan matches Telstra's at $30 for 30GB" Are you sure it's not $300 for 30gb ? being that it's $60 for 8gb?

@Ewok D'oh! Don't know how that slipped through; thanks for the subbing help. All fixed now.

Which plan is more attractive?

It's not something I'd use personally, however given the choice I believe I'd only opt for the 2gb plan on Optus's services as I only ever really use wireless internet connections to download things and I only ever really browse websites and the like whilst using a 3G connection on my existing iPhone. That and being that the company I work for provides a wireless service in the Perth CBD already, means I don't have to worry when I am at the office or in the city :)

The iPad, just like the iPhone supports the UMTS 850Mhz band (Telstra NextG) and the UMTS 2100Mhz (Telstra 3G, Three, Vodafone, Optus). When you sign up to Optus, they don't tell you that most of their 3G coverage is in their 900Mhz range which both the iPad and the iPhone don't support. You're left with limited coverage, even in major metro areas on their 2100Mhz spectrum. You get what you pay for.
