Telstra has unveiled its 3G mobile iPad data plans starting at $20 a month on the eve of Apple taking orders for its lusted-after device.

The announcement is the first from an Australian carrier and comes a day after Apple revealed the device would be available in shops from May 28 starting at $629 inc GST (3G versions start at $799). The Californian consumer electronics maker will take orders from tomorrow.

Telstra is breaking with its standard business practice and falling into line with US carrier AT&T in offering plans without a contract on a pay-as-you-go, month-to-month basis.

A $30 pre-paid SIM kit comes with 1GB of data although iPad buyers who sign on before June 30 will get an extra 2GB of traffic in the first month, Telstra said.

Recharge GB Data rate Days
$20 1 $0.02 30
$30 3 $0.01 30
$60 6 $0.01 30
$80 9 $0.01 30
$100 12 $0.01 30

Telstra will sell the kits through most of its shops and some partners but it won't sell the devices, it said.

The mobile carrier said recharges were bought through Bpay or with vouchers from Telstra shops and retailers.

$20 for one gig and it disappears in a puff of smoke after 30 days?

No need to look past the table above, it could only be Tel$tra.

I'd like a plan that wasn't time limited, like my USB 3G dongle. I buy, say 10GB, and I can keep slurping down data until it's all used.

That may be a month, six months or a year. That way I could use it when I wanted, especially if I travel a fair bit.

Nate, get a prepaid sim card from Three - around $150 for 12Gb and you have 12 months to use. Cut down the sim card to fit in the ipad slot and you should be good to go! No guarantees, but the SIM only cost $10 (you apply the $150 credit after you activate the SIM).

That said, I'm paying $59 for 1 Gb of data with Telstra for the sim my Tablet PC. What gives? Hope they're going to drop the price to $20 for me too!
