Computer games make players less violent

A new study of computer gamers has found that a session in front of World of Warcraft can make players less stressed and more calm..

The study questioned 292 male and female online gamers aged between 12 and 83 about anger and stress. They then played the game for two hours and were retested.

"There were actually higher levels of relaxation before and after playing the game as opposed to experiencing anger, but this very much depended on personality type," said team leader Jane Barnett from Middlesex University.

"This will help us develop an emotion and gaming questionnaire to distinguish the type of gamer who is likely to transfer their online aggression into everyday life."

Barnett's paper was presented at the British Psychological Society's annual conference in Dublin.

The conference also heard that people who play computer games obsessively display similar characteristics to those suffering from Asperger syndrome.

Dr John Charlton, of the University of Bolton, and Ian Danforth, of Whitman College in the US, found that the personalities of gamers became more akin to Asperger sufferers the deeper their addiction becomes.

This is typically characterised by neuroticism, and lack of extraversion and agreeableness.

"The thinking in the field is that there is a scale along which people, even those considered to be 'normal', can be placed on," said Dr Charlton.

"And that people such as engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists are nearer to the non-empathising, systemising end of the spectrum, with people with Asperger syndrome even further along again.

"Our research supports the idea that people who are heavily involved in game playing may be nearer to autistic spectrum disorders than people who have no interest in gaming."

I can't play wow anymore for the sheer fact that I dont have time to collect all the appropriate equipment that would keep me alive in pvp for more than 30 secs. At level 70, the game quits being fun for the casual gamer.

Ignoring the fact that this article is a report of two entirely separate studies on computer gaming, something that isn't indicated in the headline, the author makes no effort to justify the headline when talking about the research on the calming effects of gaming. There is no examination of the methodology or the measures used in the study in question; the only result mentioned is that gamers felt less angry, which is not the same thing as less violent.

This article also fails to even mention that the reason the finding in the headline would be interesting is because it flies in the face of a huge body of research showing that violence in television, movies, music, and games tends to lead to more violence and violent thoughts, not less.

I raid at 70 with a Hunter, this game wins and most certainly relaxes me :D I sat there playing it before my interview to calm myself haha! Nice to see some positivity towards online gaming for once tbh ^^

I agree with the Kevin's comment, but I think that any person less angry would be less violent.

I dunno about you, but I spent my weekend screaming at hunters and fury warriors for breaking CC. Not entirely sure endgame relieves stress.

I just spent 4 hours wiping repeatedly on Lady Vashj, somehow I don't feel so relaxed.

All your comments are true, especially for a hardcore gamer.

I personally played this game, and it drives my adrenaline when playing for the endgame.

BUT WAIT!, this article mention about playing for 2 hours...that cant be a hardcore gamers like you guys. From my point of view, these players basically players trying to level up.
We all know how joyful it is to learn new skills every other levels, and how relaxed to complate a quests...

I guess this article is true...
SO, you hardcore gamers, if you want to relax, go create some new toons... :D

As a person who plays WoW, endgame is brutal! I have never been more pissed off in the game then during MC days and now at Gruuls & Mag. When I lose interest in raiding, I start a new toon and BAM, I am back in the game again.
I have to say DUH! Of course an obsessive gamer is going to experience some comparisons to Asperger syndrome. From my understanding, Aspergers is classified by social interactions and repetitive interests/behavior that is focused. An obsessive gamer doesn’t interact with people face to face most of the time. People who obsess over WoW know a lot of information about specific things (i.e. specs/DPS/stats). Also, being active in a guild or in endgame requires dedication (guild events, dailies). It seems to me that someone who is dedicated to a life that revolves around a game is going to experience some of these issues in RL. I can’t believe it took a study for someone to say that people who play video games for obsessively are going to have issues in life.

I wish article would have stayed on the topic of the title.
