Faulty DHCP server downs iiNet NBN, IPTV services

Customers of iiNet’s NBN fibre broadband and iiNetTV services were unable to connect to the internet for five and a half hours on Friday due to a faulty DHCP server.

A number of broadband customers in all states, excluding Western Australia, were disconnected and unable to reconnect to the internet from 12pm Friday.

Customers of iiNet’s voice-over-IP offering, Netphone, were similarly unable to place or receive calls. 

iiNet said in a fault notice it had removed configuration for the server from network devices after idenfifying the issue late in the day, and cleared the sessions of affected customers.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) assigns IP addresses to a user's computer from a server. 

iiNet advised any customers still experiencing issues to turn their modem or router off for a minute before turning it back on.

iiNet did not quantify the number of customers affected by the time of writing.

iiNet IPTV, Netphone and broadband customers suffered similar connectivity issues last September, as a result of an issue with an internet gateway router at subsidiary internet service provider Westnet.
