The Australian passports website remains offline on Wednesday after more than 24 hours of downtime.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade notified users via its Twitter account yesterday, citing “technical difficulties”.
A spokesperson for DFAT confirmed to iTnews the Passport Office was still experiencing technical difficulties with its website today but declined to provide detail on the cause.
The downtime came as the Federal Government released an update to its Digital Economy Strategy, with a “digital first” policy that will require government agencies to make critical services available to Australians online by 2017.
DFAT recently revealed plans to replace its 14-year-old password application and issuing system, which is expected to reach end-of-life by 2015.
DFAT said at the time its existing passport issuing system was nearing capacity, with demand for passports set to rise from 1.7 million in 2009-10 to more than 2 million by 2015.
DFAT has contracted Fujitsu for the system replacement. The agency said those in need of passport assistance could call 131 232.
