Westpac has confirmed plans to offer its customers financial statements through Australia Post's planned digital mailbox system, becoming the third such company to join the service.

The digital mail service, which has yet to be launched, would allow users to "upload and easily find important documents", including mail and bills, on Telstra's cloud infrastructure.

Westpac joins the likes of AMP and Telstra to sign up as founding businesses for the service.

"This solution complements our existing online channels and provides our customers choice in how they manage their relationship not just with us, but with all of the other organisations they have relationships with," a Westpac spokesman said.

He noted that the agreement with Australia Post would not prohibit it from offering a similar service through other means, including potentially with Post's main rival Digital Post Australia.

The latter company, a joint venture between Salmat and Computershare, was cleared of copyright breach allegations brought against it by Australia Post last month in the Federal Court.

Westpac's rival Commonwealth Bank has chosen to establish its own internal cloud storage service for customers to achieve a similar outcome.
