Westpac data centre blacks out

Updated: Merchant services restored, internet banking returns.

Westpac has suffered a major outage after an "air-conditioning problem" at one of its data centres took key services offline.

A spokesman for the bank told iTnews that the shutdown had "taken out the online banking site and some ATM and EFTPOS facilities".

She said that air-conditioning to the building had been restored a short time ago and that engineers were working to restart the servers.

Update 11.11am: Westpac reports all services bar internet banking have been restored.

Update: 12:30pm: Westpac says online banking services should be restored mid-afternoon, after which time the bank will release a post-mortem.

Update: 4:50pm: Internet banking services back online.

Blogger Andrew Calvin noted that "the Westpac Bank website is down, and the Westpac/St.George EFTPOS network is down. Many merchants are affected."

Commuters in Sydney faced delays because railway stations used Westpac EFTPOS terminals.

"No EFTPOS facilities are available at CityRail stations at the moment," Transport NSW said in a statement.

"Passengers are advised to use cash, find an alternative ATM in the area, pay at their destination or pay on return."

Twitter user nataliejpeters reported long queues at Sydney's central station, tweeting a photo of CityRail's outage notification.

Haul - a Melbourne-based maker of designer iPad covers and Macbook cases - confirmed via Twitter that it had been hit by the outage.

"Our online payment gateway is down (@Westpac bank is experiencing problems)," the tweet read.

Event ticketing service Moshtix also reported issues: "Due to Westpac data centre shutdown, incl. the ATM & EFTPOS network this morning, there was a short delay in processing credit cards."

Westpac has since told ABC News Radio that the problem was being felt by customers nationwide [mp3].

The spokesman urged customers with "urgent" transactions to conduct them at a physical branch or to use telephone banking, "both of which are working".

However, at least one Twitter user reported long lines at branches.

"Que [sic] is out the door at #westpac #Lithgow system is down and only two tellers open," ianaltman wrote.

Customers could also potentially withdraw money from non-Westpac and St.George ATMs.

The Westpac spokesman hinted to ABC News that the bank would look at compensating customers or waiving any associated fees.

"Obviously we'll look at those things in the course of this but our priority at this stage is getting our facilities back up and running ASAP," the spokesman said.

Tests by iTnews confirmed that the Westpac corporate website and internet banking sites were inaccessible earlier this morning.

Corporate site access appeared to have been restored at approximately 8.40AM Sydney time but internet banking remained inaccessible an hour later.

The outage came less than a day after Westpac revealed a $3.96 billion statutory profit for the first half of the financial year.

The bank also touted a substantially increased IT headcount in support of a five-year, $2 billion upgrade designed to address legacy technology issues.

"Surely the air con control system had its own IP address for remote monitoring? Key parameter trends could have forseen this with some accuracy and the maintenance could have been planned for."

At 10AM WST, the Corporate Online main page came back up displaying the following message:

Corporate Online is currently being upgraded.
Please try again in a couple of hours.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused

Currently being upgraded? If it was just an air conditioning issue, why would they upgrade Corporate Online - all their online banking products, personal included were offsite for upgrades.

So was this to allow something similar to SRM to take over because the Servers hosting the sites were only in one DC or was their security compromised and their systems accessed and are now being upgraded with better security? Some posters think the latter, as they are noticing transactions from their accounts, which they did not authorise. It will be interesting to hear from Westpac.

In true style we missed it. Hopefully someone Youtubes it. He also had a cameo on drive time on ABC Radio NT for the same topic.

-edit, for clarity.
