NBN Co to build wireless network from late 2011

Expedited plan revealed.

NBN Co will start building its wireless network in November next year, according to a summary of the network builder's business plan [PDF] released today.

The summary also provided a significant insight into the costing assumptions for the NBN and how the total build cost would be impacted if a deal with Telstra fell through.

Read the 36-page NBN Co Business Plan Summary released by the Federal Government here.

The expedited wireless rollout was a key change to the rollout plan negotiated by the independents in return for returning Labor to power after this year's Federal election.

"NBN Co is currently progressing negotiations for wireless spectrum acquisition, which are expected to close before the end of 2010," the report said.

NBN Co was also to use some satellite technologies to cover those who could not be serviced by fibre or wireless technologies

The summary said that NBN Co would not have its own satellites in orbit until 2015 but would have an interim solution in place by June next year.

NBN Co said it would deliver fixed wireless connections of at least 12 Mbps to four percent of homes and businesses and satellite to the remaining three percent.

"This is news? It merely confirms that the NBN mix will be 93%/4%/3% as previously announced. Where's the backflip?"

If they are covering 97% with fibre and wireless I will be a monkeys uncle..

Optus claims around 96% coverage with their 3G network...

Look at their coverage maps. Look at the NBN coverage maps.. They are totally different with NBN appearing to cover only about 60% what Optus covers... Someone is telling porkies on coverage.

In fact I will be surprised if the fibre will even get to 93%. The Implementation study said to cover 92% you had to fibre every current ADSL enabled exchange. In the maps there are exchanged that have been enabled for 6 or more years not getting fibre. In fact I doubt any of the last exchanges to be enabled (list here http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/adsl-broadband-list/story-e6frf7jo-1111114613416) will be getting fibre. So how can they be covering 93%?

An investigative reporter should look into this..

I think all along it would have been a good idea to extend he Vivid Wireless service throughout Australia. There is nothing wrong with it except that it's a bit expensive at the moment. Eventually it will come down especially if the govt helped with the cost of installing towers and so on.

NBNCo wireless is almost certainly going to use the same 2.3 or 3.5 GHz spectrum currently licensed to Austar/Unwired/Vivid and deploy WiMax or LTE wireless services in that band. So NBN Wireless users will indeed get a Vivid like service all throughout Australia.
