NSW Govt to appoint chief NBN negotiator

For State asset access.

The NSW Government plans to introduce legislation today to appoint a coordinator with the power to negotiate access agreements to state-owned infrastructure with NBN Co.

State Minister for Commerce Paul Lynch said today the coordinator "would be established with the powers to act on behalf of the State."

"A key role for the coordinator will be to negotiate NBN Co access to NSW Government-owned infrastructure - such as power poles, microwave towers and road, rail and river bridges - to be used in the rollout," he said.

Lynch said that NBN Co had already agreed to use state-owned energy infrastructure in its first stage rollouts in Kiama Downs and Armidale.

He said NBN Co "was keen to access assets in other areas of NSW where it would speed up the rollout."

"The coordinator will ensure a whole of Government approach to negotiations with NBN Co to effectively manage issues such as liability, insurance cover, contract termination provisions, and occupational health and safety obligations," Lynch said.

He said the NSW NBN Coordinator would be supported by an existing cross-government and industry NSW NBN Taskforce which had been working closely with NBN Co to prepare the state for the rollout.

Sections of this report must start alarm bells ringing with many PEOPLE.
From looking around as I drive around Sydney I see many Power Poles in a poor condition. I also see many poles with a decided lean out over the road and some even have the side sheared off then from trucks with a High load as the truck leans into them due to the camber of the load. Many of these poles are overloaded and are being pulled out over the road by the weight of the wires and cables attached to them.
Under these concerns and those held by the public at large, plus the lack of liability of overhead cables vs. underground cables must send alarm cables ringing in the minds of many people. In times of emergency such as bush fires which often come into Sydney’s Suburbs such as Turrumurra, Lane Cove suburbs, which have lost homes to Bush Fires and who will ever forget the 1994 Jannalie and Como fires where people were killed and over 100 homes lost to Bush fires.
I myself have been affective when suffering from sever chest pains I tried to call an ambulance only to find I had no communications as both my land lines were out as was my VoIP phone when a Truck hit a pole. Likewise my mobile was almost useless as I live in a Black Spot causing me to walk out onto the middle of the road in distress to call "000" for an ambulance.
There is also the Environmental affect which Premier Connealy would probably be aware of as she seems not to have immigrated to Australia from the USA till after all the Optus cable was erected and the Demonstrations had ceased.
Politicians should come down from their Ivory Towers and listen to the concerns of the electorate on such matters for once, an NBN cable strung from power poles is not only undesirable but over time more costly than underground.
