Telstra to stop kilobyte-charging on prepaid wireless

Offset by "improved recharge values"?

Telstra planned to revamp its prepaid wireless broadband plans next month.

The new plans start October 21, according to the text of a brief email sent to some customers this week that surfaced on the Whirlpool broadband forums.

A change would see the telco charge by the megabyte, rather than users being charged for each kilobyte transferred.

"This change will bring us in line with the market," a Telstra spokesman told iTnews.

Competitor Optus charged prepaid mobile broadband users "in 10 MB increments".

Telstra's current prepaid mobile broadband website said: "Your data is charged per kilobyte so you only pay for what you use".

Telstra's spokesman said the changes would "have little impact on most customers [because] we will be introducing improved recharge values and a wider choice of expiry periods on some plans".

The new plans will be announced soon.

Oh great, so every time you poll to check email you get 1MB whacked off your allowance. Telstra, 9 steps forward, 10 steps backward.

I cant believe the idiots in the ACCC have allowed this to go on within this industry. They allow phone plans to be quoted in dollars which mean nothing for a comparison between companies, they allow companies like optus to charge in 10mb blocks so when your comparing data plans, optus' plan looks the best out of all the others.

I will never buy a prepaid wireless dongle until the prepaid companies stop selling prepaid wireless in blocks that you have to use within a very short period of time before expiry.

It's bad enough phone companies do this with prepaid, I'd love to buy a prepaid wireless dongle to keep with me when I visit job sites and don't want to have to recharge constantly just to keep the option open in case I need it one day.

I'll stick to using the internet at home until they start being more generous with the expiry time frames.

Isn't this what commerce and Telstra in particular, is all about? MONEY! Making it I mean. Like the idle rich who live, breathe, eat and sleep money there is never enough. Telstra, among others, is merely another of the same breed! I guess one will just have to ensure that one does not d/l a small file!
