Red Hat hits back at Ellison

Defends performance, speed of updates.

Red Hat has published a blog post in defence of its business model after being the target of an extraordinary attack by Oracle chief Larry Ellison at Oracle OpenWorld this week.

Ellison criticised Red Hat whilst justifying Oracle's decision to release its own Linux kernel, claiming that the enterprise Linux vendor was too slow to update its distribution for industry partners.

Without naming Ellison nor Oracle, Red Hat's blog posted today said competitors wanted to "draw from [Linux's] success" whilst seeking to "selectively open their offerings while seeking to lock in their customers."

Red Hat said it offered technology updates and upgrades to customers "every six months on average" - ensuring the release was tested and quality assured to guarantee stability.

The company also defended the security of its code, arguing that over 98 percent of security fixes in its latest release were being delivered within one calendar day of being identified.

On the subject of performance, Red Hat said its goal was to have Red Hat Enterprise Linux "deliver out of the box performance for multiple workloads and servers, not just one or two configurations.

"Our commitment is deep and lasting, not fireworks and hyperbole followed by a huge invoice and vendor lock-in," the company said.

I would have thought the last thing the open source community needs is dissension between vendors. I mean, WTF are Oracle tying to achieve here ?

Further more, what's next ? What are their long term plans for MySql ? or VirtualBox ?

I already have colleagues in the process of converting existing MySql systems across to Postgres.

I know my systems and those of my customers wont be seeing any Oracle 'Nix' boxes deployed anytime soon.

Postgresql is honestly one of the best database systems I have seen (you wont be dissapointed). Also kinda ironic how Oracle said a massive "screw you" to postgresql by suddenly shutting off all their servers for the postgresql

Lounge-lizard-larry is trying to destroy the open source community by any means at his disposal. Oracle is using its current markety dominance to "acquire and supress", "divide and conquer" and will follow any path in pursuit of the almighty dollar. Larry wants to completely own you (Hardware, Software, Services, plus every thought that you're allowed to have).

Oracle's foray into Linux has nothing to do with offering clients choice, savings, or better service. Its all about owning your complete environ and locking you in so you can never escape. Oracle Linux (or will it become Onix) will integrate Oracle proprietary database services so that you can't simply move to another platform.

Its time for the market to say NO! And it starts with YOU! If we let Oracle get away with this we'll be forever paying the Piper.

Say NO today! Download PostGRES, Ingres, or any of the other great open source databases and set yourself free.

Should we add Xen to that list? Unless I'm mistaken Citrix owns Xen and Oracle owns Citrix?

It's a moot point for me as I use KVM anyway. But it does appear Oracle are driving a wedge (or trying to) into the open source community.

Thinking some more about this, it wouldn't be a case of a bit of "tit for tat" would it?
Seeing as RH announced it was dropping support for Xen in RHEL6 and focusing on KVM instead.

Eh Oracle has been getting quite weird lately (especially with the whole suing android thing and killing OpenSolaris). Its probably deeper then that
