New shadow communications minister Malcolm Turnbull wasted no time in sounding a warning to his Labor opponent Stephen Conroy saying there was no one was "more committed to availability of high speed Internet access" than him.

In a blog post accepting the role given to him by Opposition leader Tony Abbott, Turnbull continued his predecessor Tony Smith's work by blasting the NBN and lamented the cutting of the Coalition's OPEL plan that preceded it.
And he turned his attention to the planned rejig of the NBN rollout to favour regional areas in a deal cut to return Labor to government.
"That's no doubt beneficial for internet users in whichever rural regions Labor plans to favour first, but bad news for consumers in other under-served areas such as the outer suburbs," he said.
"The switch will also greatly increase the total amount of capital the Government needs to commit to the NBN.
"Senator Conroy has not yet been honest with the Australian people about these financial implications for the NBN of Labor's negotiations with the independents. He must do so now."
