Telstra on track with NSW broadband network

Last schools getting connected.

Telstra has completed "95 percent" of a $280 million fibre network connecting 2,400 public school and TAFE sites across NSW.

The NSW Government said today that remaining schools would be connected to the 4,500 kilometre optic fibre network before the end of the year.

"Only ten contracted schools now remain and we expect those sites to be connected by the end of this year - which is still within schedule," state education minister Verity Firth said.

"The infrastructure rollout has now been officially met having exceeded the contracted target of 95 percent completion."

Telstra won the contract to build the network and provide services for an initial four-year period in November 2009.

Looks like the NBN Co just saved itself $280 million, unless it buys or duplicates this fibre network.

That's fantastic news. Our small school (Wytaliba primary school - Diehard NSW 2370) Has had 11 million dollars worth of dark fibre sitting within 50m (fibre tail poking out of a conduit) since December 2005. I'm not sure if the $10000 cisco router is still gathering dust in the store-room.

I'll be making some serious noise if this job isn't finished finally.
