Greens threaten rocky path ahead for filter laws

Change tack or change the proposed legislation.

The Greens have put the Government on notice that they will likely move “significant amendments” to proposed ISP-level filtering legislation when it is introduced next year.

Senator Scott Ludlam expressed the party’s “deep concern” at Communications Minister Stephen Conroy’s plans to make the filtering mandatory from 2011.

He said that a consultation paper released by Conroy - which is separate from the Enex Testlabs report on the filtering trial - set out “the pointless nature” of the Government’s proposal.

"The 'discussion paper' only asks for input on one aspect of the policy, with the rest apparently locked in,” Ludlam said.

“I encourage people to communicate the full range of their concerns to the Government rather than being deterred by what looks like a done deal.

"Unless the Government changes tack, the Greens will be moving significant amendments to this legislation if it is introduced to the Senate.”

According to Conroy, the legislation was due to be introduced to the Parliament in Autumn sittings next year.

GetUp is running a campaign to raise awareness about the filter legislation and to utilise people power to try and stop the legislation from being passed. I would highly recommended everyone signup here:

http://www.getup.org.au/campaign/SaveTheNet/442

Then use GetUps tool to send an email alert to everyone you know to bring this to their attention. This is no longer just an issue for techies, activists or journalists, this is now an issue that every net user in Australia needs to be aware of!

I've been looking around and can't really find any people/groups concerned with this. The media is so quiet, as I'm assuming they want an internet gag as then they'd be on fair ground with the internet (which as of now is a far better resource for balanced news and information).

I'm down for protests, demonstrations, stunts (to get media attention) and I'm about to sending letters to representatives demanding they vote down this assault on our freedoms. But the fact is we need people to be aware and fight against Conroy and his religious minorities which somehow are louder than the whole, however complacent, Australian majority.
