TPG, Soul bump up ADSL subscribers

 

Almost 90,000 added in past year.

TPG and Soul added a combined 88,000 broadband customers in the financial year ended July 31, pushing parent SP Telemedia's results into the black.

The parent reported a net profit after tax of $17.7 million, exceeding earlier guidance and trumping last year's $18.9 million loss.

"The continued growth of the business has been underpinned by broadband subscribers," SP Telemedia executive chairman David Teoh said in a statement.

The business added 56,000 broadband subscribers in the second half alone. Total subscribers reached 400,000 this month.

The telco also said increasing on-net services had lifted margins in its corporate and government business.

A report by the Australian Bureau of Statistics earlier this month found that the growth in fixed line broadband has stagnated due to the growth of wireless broadband services.

That certainly explains why my TPG connection is so poor. Constant drop outs every few minutes, lacklustre speeds and the ISP trying to tell me it's my fault. Service is unusable. Anyone else having difficulties?

It looks as if the experience of 400,000 other subscribers, of whom I have been one for several years, are not having the difficulties you are having.

If you're getting dropouts, you should probably be talking to Telstra rather than TPG. If your transfer speed is substantially under the negotiated ADSL2 speed, *then* you need to talk to TPG. Just remember that transfer speed (as displayed by the modem) is usually in mega*bits* and downloads in mega*bytes* per second.
