Sydney's notorious parking police have added to pressure on Telstra engineers to fix a fibre optic cable cut in the city's central business district, which has left the areas without access to services since Tuesday night.

A City of Sydney ranger was seen this morning harassing Telstra workers and contractors attempting to fix the damage - allegedly caused by a commercial jackhammer [pictured in gallery, top right] that cut through eight fibre optic cables and three major copper distribution cables affecting thousands of customer's telecommunications.

The city ranger told Telstra workers and contractors to move their vehicles, which line the street next to the scene of the repairs. Workers told iTnews they needed to be close by as the repairs would take longer if they were to park elsewhere.

Telstra spokesperson Craig Middelton told iTnews yesterday that the cut was serious.

“At about 9:30 last night [Tuesday] Energy Australia was doing some exploratory trenching and they’ve put a jack hammer into eight fibre optic cables, three major copper distribution cables, with a total of 10,000 copper pairs," Middelton said.

"[The] contractor ... was doing exploratory trench works and for some reason or another they haven’t been aware of the Telstra ducting that was 400 millimeters below the surface encased in concrete," he said.

It's been reported that the contractors told Energy Australia they used "Dial Before You Dig" before digging. An audit of the contractors, work equipment and procedures was being carried out.

iTnews has requested comment from Energy Australia.

"We are working 24 hours to get everyone back and that’s why we are working on installing the fibre optics first," Middelton said.

Middleton said the process of repairing the fibre would take at least a week.

"There’s over 10,000 copper pairs [which] is going to be an intricate job that is going to take about a week for us to get all of those customers back up again. You’ve got to make sure you’ve got the right pair from the exchange. It’s a time consuming job."

Perhaps this confirms that parking rangers aren't people but are ghouls from hell?

nobody expects much from a bloke on the end of a jack hammer.
Parking inspectors need to be fairly clever to survive in their chosen profession.
Doesn't sound like this one is going to last.

Parking police are contracted to the local council. This story is just one of thousands of reasons why we dont need this level of government.

It's no secret that the work carried out by brown bombers makes them one of the most hated and despised factions in the community. If there really is a necessity for these rediculous parking rules that the local councils enforces, then surely they can relax them. Without a doubt it would reduce the complaints against them, reduce the insults and assults, and definitley eliminate senseless incidents like this.

What you need to do is send every business effected by this issue a notice that the local council is deliberately slowing down the process and who the councilors names and phone numbers. So local business can give them a firm hard kick up the back side. I would go as far as to make this an election issue. The original parking laws where to allow everyone a fare go but now it is all about the mighty dollar. Greed will see the anger in the community eventually boil over and one day mark my words blood will be spilt. Long live Robin Hood!!
