Telstra is expecting increased SMS and phone calls this Sunday, as Australians get in the Mother's Day spirit.

Research released by Telstra today found that more than 40 percent of mothers were expected to receive an SMS for Mother's Day, according to a statement from the telco.

Jenny Young, head of consumer marketing at Telstra, said it was predicting that five million SMSs would be sent on Mother's Day this year by its customers.

For those that preferred to phone, Young said that about 17 million calls were made on Telstra's network last Mother's Day. The most popular time to call is between 7am and 7pm, according to Telstra.

Young said the telco wasn't expecting any delays for its customers, despite the high volume of calls predicted for Sunday.

Forty-one percent of mothers expected their children to SMS them on Sunday, according to the survey which was carried out by The Wallis Group. But 25 percent of those surveyed did not know how to reply to those messages. “They may have a phone, but they don't know how to reply,” Young said. “One in four mums really struggle when it comes to sending SMS text messages.”
